The Ruhr-Univer­sity Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading rese­arch univer­si­ties. The Univer­sity draws its strengths from both the diver­sity and the proxi­mity of scien­ti­fic and engi­ne­e­ring disci­pli­nes on a single, cohe­rent campus. This highly dyna­mic setting enables students and rese­ar­chers to work across tradi­ti­o­nal boun­da­ries of acade­mic subjects and facul­ties. The RUB is a vital insti­tu­tion in the Ruhr area, which has been selec­ted as Euro­pean Capi­tal of Culture for the year 2010.

The Ruhr-Univer­sity Bochum – Insti­tute for Social Move­ments – invi­tes appli­ca­ti­ons for the posi­tion of an Assis­tant Profes­sor (W1) in «Globa­li­za­tion Conflicts, Work, and Social Move­ments» to start on 1 Febru­ary 2013.

W1-Profes­sors are tempo­rary posi­ti­ons of three years in the first instance. The posi­tion can be exten­ded to anot­her three years follo­wing a posi­tive evalu­a­tion.

The Insti­tute for Social Move­ments is a central rese­arch unit of the RUB. The Insti­tute is speci­a­li­zed in rese­arch and teaching on social move­ments in the past and present (for detai­led infor­ma­tion see http://www.isb.ruhr-uni-bochum.de).

The future holder of the post will repre­sent the subject of «Globa­li­za­tion Conflicts, Work and Social Move­ments» in rese­arch and teaching with the focus on the social science based analy­sis of current global and trans­na­ti­o­nal linka­ges between social move­ments.

A docto­ral degree of outs­tan­ding quality, prefe­rably in the social or poli­ti­cal scien­ces, is requi­red as is a strong publi­ca­tion record. The docto­rate shall have been obtai­ned no longer than five years ago. Evidence of special apti­tude for acade­mic teaching is just as much requi­red as the willing­ness to parti­ci­pate in the self-gover­ning bodies of the RUB and to get invol­ved gene­rally in univer­sity proces­ses accor­ding to the RUB’s mission state­ment. We expect also the willing­ness to parti­ci­pate in the bodies of the Insti­tute for Social Move­ments.

We expect further more:

  1. Willing­ness and ability to attract exter­nal funding.
  2. Readi­ness to parti­ci­pate in inter­dis­ci­pli­nary acade­mic work, espe­ci­ally to coope­rate closely with histo­ri­ans of social move­ments.
  3. High commit­ment in teaching.
