CFP: ASA 2012: Globalization from Below Location: Puerto Rico Date Submitted: 2012-01-10 Announcement ID: 191200 The increased movement of populations, goods, and services across borders has precipitated new commitments and kinships that counter the self-aggrandizing, totalizing tendencies of top-down globalization. The recent Occupy movement has illuminated the critical role of globalization engendered by subnational, grassroots trajectories in thought and action. I am accepting proposals for a panel that explores the ways in which individuals and communities enact globalization from below, and the potential of these acts and visions to create legitimate models for global constituencies. Possible topics include but are not limited to: legal and political challenges to neoliberal ideology and policies; the use of information technologies to create counternarratives; local and global activist responses such as the WTO protests in Seattle or the global Occupy Movement; movements for race, gender, and class equality; resistance to IMF, World Bank, and WTO practices; alternative social forms such as NGOs and TANS; the globalization of knowledge and pedagogy from below; literary and visual interventions; labor unions and environmental justice movements; and new forms of cosmopolitanism, such as what John Tomlinson calls “ethical glocalism.” Please submit a 250-word abstract and 1-pg CV to Penny Vlagopoulos pigi [ punto ] vlagopoulostamiu [ punto ] edu (pigi[dot]vlagopoulos[at]tamiu[dot]edu) by Friday, January 20.
