/ETC Istanbul, 9-13 September 2009

VENUE:

istanbul bienal is starting on the 12th (http://www.iksv.org/bienal11/)

so one venue we were keeping in mind, and had good contacts with is occupied with that..

thanks to an academician friend, we will probably arrange Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (www.msgsu.edu.tr)

Begum, a friend from the team is working in the sociology department of the school, and she is carrying out the process with the university.. we have been in contact with them and they are really positive with the event. on monday we will make an official application and by wednesday will have the final answer.

the university is in Findikli neighborhood, has a nice old building, big class rooms and is by the Bosporus, which means sunbathing next to the water, and if you are lucky you can see some dolphin families.

TRAIN TO ISTANBUL

COMPUTERS/MATERIAL:

we will ask for donations in the call out, and have some contacts, people who work in companies.

ACCOMODATION:

www.hostelneverland.com

this is a hostel run by some friends.. there is in detail information about the hostel in the website... but shortly they have breakfast + wireless internet, is located in tophane, really central, close to taksim-beyoglu area, also close to Mimar Sinan-10 min walk.

we will try to accommodate people in the housez also, but at the same time thought that its nice if people are staying together, eating together (?)

so we'll see how it works out.

FOOD:

there is a newly formed food collective in istanbul. they are willing to cook vegetarian food for us. also some meals in vegan. in lambda we have a big kitchen which is never used for cooking till now. we will see if we can arrange cooking there,, or in the hostel, which has a open kitchen for everybody.

PROGRAM:

* upstage

* the idea of open source is not so common and known in turkey, same with techno feminism, so we thought of having an open talk/discussion/introduction to all of these ideas, relating it with patriarchy.

* another talk/discussion about womens movement in turkey.

* we decided on 2 workshops going for at least 3 days. linux + web. starting from really basics and going in detail, like 1.5 hour each day, so people don't get lost and don't get drowned in information at once.

we thought it is important that these workshops are given in 2 languages, so anybody up for giving a linux workshop in turkish ;) and these workshops will be held in the evenings so that people who are working also can join.

* image and text editing

* DIY dildo, yaaaay! - do we have contacts to the people who gave made this workshop before, or maybe something more general on home made sex toys.

* manipulated (liberated) robots/toys -- the dream of every antimilitarist in turkey; its really common to sell these soldier toys, so it could be interesting if they are shouting out anti-war slogans.

* film and video editing (begum and erini should go to filmmor sometime!)

* ubuntu

* screenings of copyleft films.

LOCAL WOMAN ORGANIZATIONS:

a day visit to amargi, socialist-feminist collective, mor cati and lambda.

new suggestions from begum:

- a friend of mine can give a workshop on pinhole camera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinhole_camera)

- something on hacking?

- screen printing -- begum says: i really want to make t-shirts for the mobilization against the IMF and the world bank meeting in istanbul:)) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen-printing)

peer 2 peer and pirating (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peer-to-peer)
